Morin señala dos errores opuestos: las mentes que solo trocean ven la diversidad y pierden la unidad; las mentes abstractas ven una unidad que borra las diferencias. La salida es concebir la unidad múltiple, unitas multiplex. La unidad humana es genérica: un mismo patrimonio de especie, el mismo cerebro, la aptitud para el lenguaje, las mismas emociones de base. Morin points to two opposite errors: minds that only slice up see diversity and lose unity; abstract minds see a unity that erases differences. The way out is to conceive multiple unity, unitas multiplex. Human unity is generic: one shared species heritage, the same brain, the aptitude for language, the same basic emotions.
Sobre esa base única florece una diversidad infinita: miles de lenguas, mitos, rostros, caracteres. La diversidad no contradice la unidad — la realiza. Y hay más: la era planetaria nos ha religado a todos en una comunidad de destino. «Se ha vuelto a encontrar la unidad humana, pero todavía no lo sabemos.» On that single base flowers an infinite diversity: thousands of languages, myths, faces, characters. Diversity doesn't contradict unity — it realizes it. And there's more: the planetary era has reconnected us all into a community of destiny. "Human unity has been found again, but we don't yet know it."

And on that single base, an explosion: thousands of languages, mythologies, rites, cuisines, faces, temperaments. Human diversity is, says Morin, fabulous and innumerable. But it doesn't contradict unity: diversity is inscribed in unity, as life, one since the first cell, diversified into millions of forms.
La comunidad de destinoThe community of destiny
La planetarización nos ha religado por mil redes y nos amenaza a todos a la vez —arma nuclear, peligro ecológico—. Somos «hijos y ciudadanos de la Tierra-Patria». Hay comunidad de destino; lo que falta, dice Morin, es la consciencia de ella. Esa consciencia sería decisiva. Planetarization has reconnected us through a thousand networks and threatens us all at once —nuclear weapons, ecological peril—. We are "children and citizens of the Earth-Homeland". There is a community of destiny; what's missing, says Morin, is the consciousness of it. That consciousness would be decisive.

Cualquier humano puede tener descendencia con cualquier otro humano: somos interfecundos sin excepción. Bajo todas las «razas» hay una unidad genética que las desmiente. La diversidad es de superficie; la unidad, profunda y real. Any human can have offspring with any other human: we are interfertile without exception. Beneath all "races" lies a genetic unity that belies them. Diversity is on the surface; unity is deep and real.
Emocional — la sonrisa universalEmotional — the universal smile
Un bebé ciego de nacimiento sonríe sin que nadie se lo enseñe. Ekman halló seis emociones de base idénticas en todos los pueblos, arcaicos y modernos. Ekman found six basic emotions identical across all peoples, archaic and modern. We laugh and weep the same in every language: the affective unity of humankind.
Planetario — el destino comúnPlanetary — the common destiny
El cambio climático y las pandemias no respetan fronteras: nos enseñan, a la fuerza, que somos una comunidad de destino. La unidad ya está aquí, tejida por mil redes. A humanity unified into the uniform would be an impoverishment, not a fulfillment. Unity that kills diversity betrays it.

«Cada cultura es un mundo incomunicable» niega la unidad genérica real. No somos especies distintas: compartimos cerebro, emociones, lenguaje. La diferencia es profunda, pero la unidad lo es más. "Each culture is an incommunicable world" denies the real generic unity. We aren't distinct species: we share brain, emotions, language. Difference is deep, but unity is deeper.

El enemigo de esta comunidad, advierte Morin, «no es exterior: está oculto en ella, es sapiens-demens». La unidad ya nos liga; reconocerla — sin disolver la diversidad — es la tarea civilizatoria que cierra todo el tomo. The enemy of this community, Morin warns, "isn't external: it's hidden within it, it's sapiens-demens". Unity already binds us; recognizing it — without dissolving diversity — is the civilizational task that closes the whole volume.
Donde se vuelve incómodoWhere it becomes uncomfortable
¿Cómo afirmar la unidad sin borrar las diferencias, y la diversidad sin negar lo común? Reducirse a la unidad lleva al uniformismo imperial; reducirse a la diversidad, al choque de identidades incomunicables. Morin pide sostener las dos a la vez — unitas multiplex — y recuerda que el obstáculo no está afuera: el enemigo de la humanidad está en la humanidad. Aquí se anudan las tres series: el conocer, las ideas y lo humano se reúnen en una sola pregunta — ¿sabremos reconocernos a tiempo? How do you affirm unity without erasing differences, and diversity without denying the common? Reducing to unity leads to imperial uniformism; reducing to diversity, to the clash of incommunicable identities. Morin asks us to hold both at once — unitas multiplex — and recalls that the obstacle isn't outside: the enemy of humanity is within humanity. Here the three series knot together: knowing, ideas and the human meet in one question — will we know how to recognize ourselves in time?
