Morin abre El Método 5 con Pascal: el hombre, «gloria y desecho del universo… ¿quién desenredará este embrollo?». Su diagnóstico: las ciencias trocean lo humano — la física lo ignora, la biología lo reduce a animal, las ciencias humanas lo fragmentan. Lévi-Strauss llegó a decir que su fin «no es revelar al hombre, sino disolverlo». Morin opens Method 5 with Pascal: man, "glory and refuse of the universe… who will unravel this tangle?". His diagnosis: the sciences slice up the human — physics ignores it, biology reduces it to an animal, the human sciences fragment it. Lévi-Strauss even said their aim "isn't to reveal man, but to dissolve him".
No se trata de sumar disciplinas, ni de «reducir lo humano a lo humano»: estamos enraizados en el cosmos, la vida y la especie. Hace falta reunir lo biológico, lo cultural, lo social y lo individual. Each discipline holds a fragment; no one holds the whole. Hence the paradox that sets the tone: the more we know, the less we understand.

Lo humano no se deja reducir a lo biológico (somos animales) ni a lo cultural (somos cultura): es las dos cosas a la vez, y la tensión entre ellas. Y se enraíza más allá: en la vida, en la especie, en el cosmos. Somos un nudo, no un fragmento. The human can't be reduced to the biological (we are animals) nor to the cultural (we are culture): it is both at once, and the tension between them. And it roots beyond: in life, in the species, in the cosmos. We are a knot, not a fragment.

Más datos no es más comprensión: el retrato se vuelve más nítido y el rostro, más extraño. You have your genome sequenced, your brain scanned, your behavior modeled by algorithms. And you still don't know who you are. More data isn't more understanding: the portrait grows sharper and the face, stranger.

Cada época se definió a sí misma: hombre racional, hombre económico, hombre máquina, hombre genético. Cada definición dejó fuera algo esencial — el sueño, el mito, el amor, la muerte. Lo humano siempre excede su retrato. Each era defined itself: rational man, economic man, machine man, genetic man. Each definition left out something essential — dream, myth, love, death. The human always exceeds its portrait.
Cotidiano — «conócete a ti mismo»Everyday — "know thyself"
El mandato más antiguo y el menos cumplido. Eres lo más próximo que tienes y, sin embargo, cuando intentas mirarte con franqueza, te descubres opaco, contradictorio, plural. La intimidad no garantiza la transparencia. The oldest command, the least fulfilled. You are the nearest thing you have and yet, when you try to look at yourself frankly, you find yourself opaque, contradictory, plural. Intimacy guarantees no transparency.

No es humanismo ingenuoIt isn't naive humanism
No idealiza al hombre. La humanidad incluye la inhumanidad: la misma especie que crea arte y compasión inventa el genocidio. Pensar lo humano es pensar también su sombra. It doesn't idealize man. Humanity includes inhumanity: the same species that creates art and compassion invents genocide. To think the human is to think its shadow too.

No es reducir lo humano a lo humanoIt isn't reducing the human to the human
El hombre no se explica solo por sí mismo. Somos también cosmos, materia, vida, especie. Olvidar ese enraizamiento es otra forma de mutilación — la del antropocentrismo. Man isn't explained by himself alone. We are also cosmos, matter, life, species. To forget that rootedness is another mutilation — that of anthropocentrism.
De ahí la paradoja: cuanto más conocemos, menos comprendemos al ser humano. Desintegrando lo humano se elimina el asombro y la interrogación sobre la identidad humana. El culpable, para Morin, es el modo de conocer: la disyunción que «ha vuelto inhumanas» a las ciencias humanas. La salida no es menos ciencia, sino otra forma de pensar — una antropología compleja que reúna lo que las disciplinas separan. The culprit, for Morin, is the mode of knowing: the disjunction that "has made the human sciences inhuman". The way out isn't less science, but another way of thinking — a complex anthropology that reunites what the disciplines separate.
Donde se vuelve incómodoWhere it becomes uncomfortable
Si lo humano es un misterio irreductible, ¿no es renunciar a conocerlo? No: es cambiar el modo de conocer — de la disyunción a la complejidad. Y aceptar que comprenderse no es atraparse en una definición, sino aprender a habitar la pregunta. Eso choca con toda ciencia que, para ser «rigurosa», necesita disolver al sujeto que estudia. If the human is an irreducible mystery, isn't that giving up on knowing it? No: it's changing the mode of knowing — from disjunction to complexity. And accepting that to understand oneself isn't to trap oneself in a definition, but to learn to inhabit the question. That collides with any science that, to be "rigorous", needs to dissolve the subject it studies.
