Cada uno es el centro de su mundo — y un punto entre miles de millones de centros. Each one is the center of their world — and a dot among billions of centers.
Ningún otro puede decir «yo» en tu lugar. Y todos los demás dicen «yo» igual que tú. No one else can say "I" in your place. And everyone else says "I" just like you.
Ocupar el centro del mundoOccupying the center of the world
La ciencia disolvió al sujeto; Morin lo reintroduce y lo funda bio-lógicamente. Ser sujeto es ocupar el centro del propio mundo, para conocer y actuar: eso es, literalmente, el egocentrismo. Comporta un principio de exclusión (nadie ocupa mi lugar, ni mi gemelo idéntico: «el Yo no es compartible») y uno de inclusión (puedo meter un Nosotros en mi centro). Science dissolved the subject; Morin reintroduces it and grounds it bio-logically. To be a subject is to occupy the center of one's own world, to know and to act: that is, literally, egocentrism. It entails a principle of exclusion (no one occupies my place, not even my identical twin: "the I is not shareable") and one of inclusion (I can bring a We into my center).
De ahí la paradoja que recorre la cápsula: ser sujeto «hace de nosotros seres únicos, pero esta unicidad es lo que hay de más común». Cada cual es el centro insustituible — y por eso mismo ninguno es especial. El sujeto es autonomía dependiente: centro de su mundo, y a la vez producto de la especie, la sociedad y la cultura. Hence the paradox that runs through this capsule: being a subject "makes us unique beings, but this uniqueness is the most common thing of all". Each is the irreplaceable center — and for that very reason none is special. The subject is dependent autonomy: center of its world, and at once product of species, society and culture.
El egocentrismo: ocupar el centroEgocentrism: occupying the center
Ser sujeto no es vanidad: es la posición lógica de todo viviente que conoce y actúa desde sí. El principio de exclusión es radical: tu lugar no lo ocupa nadie, ni siquiera tu gemelo homocigoto, que tiene tus mismos genes y tu mismo rostro. Lo que te hace único no son tus rasgos — es ese puesto. To be a subject isn't vanity: it's the logical position of every living thing that knows and acts from itself. The exclusion principle is radical: no one occupies your place, not even your identical twin, who has your genes and your face. What makes you unique isn't your traits — it's that seat.
Yo y NosotrosI and We
El egocentrismo no es solo egoísmo: comporta inclusión. Puedo meter en mi centro un Nosotros — pareja, hijos, patria. «Un Yo que está en Nosotros y un nosotros que está en Mí» (Hegel). Del mismo dispositivo brotan el egoísmo y el altruismo: puedo sacrificarlo todo a mí, o sacrificarme yo por otro. Egocentrism isn't only egoism: it entails inclusion. I can bring a We into my center — partner, children, homeland. "An I that is in We and a we that is in Me" (Hegel). From the same device spring egoism and altruism: I can sacrifice everything to myself, or sacrifice myself for another.
Autonomía dependienteDependent autonomy
El sujeto se afirma como centro, pero depende del entorno, la especie, la sociedad, los otros. «Si no hay otros yo, no hay yo» (Tchuang-Tsé). Soy autónomo porque dependo: mi singularidad se teje con lo que recibo de fuera. La libertad del sujeto es relativa, enraizada, situada. The subject affirms itself as center, yet depends on the environment, the species, society, others. "If there are no other I's, there is no I" (Zhuangzi). I am autonomous because I depend: my singularity is woven from what I receive from outside. The subject's freedom is relative, rooted, situated.

Cotidiano — la foto grupalEveryday — the group photo
En una foto de grupo te buscas primero a ti. No es vanidad: eres el centro desde el que ves todo. Y cada uno de los demás hace exactamente lo mismo. Mil centros del mundo, en la misma sala, mirándose en la misma imagen. In a group photo you look for yourself first. It's not vanity: you're the center from which you see everything. And each of the others does exactly the same. A thousand centers of the world, in one room, looking for themselves in one image.
Gemelos — el mismo ADN, dos «yo»Twins — same DNA, two "I"s
Dos personas con genes idénticos y el mismo rostro — y cada una dice «yo» por sí sola, intransferible. Lo que te hace único no es tu cuerpo ni tu carácter: es ocupar un puesto que nadie más, jamás, podrá ocupar. Two people with identical genes and the same face — and each says "I" on its own, untransferable. What makes you unique isn't your body or your character: it's occupying a seat that no one else, ever, could occupy.
Amor y duelo — incluir al otroLove and grief — including the other
Cuando amas, metes a otro dentro de tu centro (inclusión); cuando muere, el centro queda herido en su propia carne. El altruismo —dar la vida por alguien— no es lo contrario del egocentrismo: nace del mismo dispositivo que el egoísmo. When you love, you bring another inside your center (inclusion); when they die, the center is wounded in its own flesh. Altruism —giving your life for someone— isn't the opposite of egocentrism: it springs from the same device as egoism.

Tus moléculas se renuevan, tus células mueren y nacen, tu rostro cambia hasta volverse irreconocible. Y el Yo persiste — no como sustancia, sino como cualidad de sujeto que atraviesa todas esas transformaciones. Your molecules renew, your cells die and are born, your face changes until unrecognizable. And the I persists — not as substance, but as a quality of being subject that runs through all those transformations.

«Ser sujeto hace de nosotros seres únicos, pero esta unicidad es lo que hay de más común.» Por eso, para Morin, el egocentrismo del sujeto «favorece no sólo el egoísmo, sino también el altruismo»: somos capaces de consagrar nuestro Yo a un Tú y a un Nosotros. "Being a subject makes us unique beings, but this uniqueness is the most common thing of all." So, for Morin, the subject's egocentrism "favors not only egoism but also altruism": we are capable of devoting our I to a You and a We.
Donde se vuelve incómodoWhere it becomes uncomfortable
Si soy el centro del mundo y un punto entre miles de millones, ¿cuál es verdad? Las dos, a la vez. El egocentrismo es vital — sin él no hay sujeto — pero también fuente de cegueras: todo lo veo desde mí. Ahí empieza la ética: cuando reconozco que el otro es también un centro insustituible, un «yo» tan real como el mío. Difícil de sostener — porque su mundo nunca lo veré desde dentro. If I'm the center of the world and a dot among billions, which is true? Both, at once. Egocentrism is vital — without it there's no subject — but also a source of blindness: I see everything from myself. There ethics begins: when I recognize the other is also an irreplaceable center, an "I" as real as mine. Hard to sustain — because I'll never see their world from inside.
