No eres un individuo que además vive en sociedad. Eres, a la vez y siempre, individuo, sociedad y especie. You're not an individual who also lives in society. You are, at once and always, individual, society and species.
Tres miradas que no se expulsanThree gazes that don't expel each other
«La humanidad emerge de un ajuste de trinidades», escribe Morin, y la primera es individuo-sociedad-especie. Cada término contiene a los otros: la especie está en los individuos; la sociedad está dentro de cada individuo, imprimiéndole su cultura desde el nacimiento. Y giran en bucle: la especie produce los individuos que producen la especie; los individuos producen la sociedad que produce los individuos. "Humanity emerges from an adjustment of trinities", Morin writes, and the first is individual-society-species. Each term contains the others: the species is in the individuals; society is inside each individual, imprinting its culture from birth. And they turn in a loop: the species produces the individuals who produce the species; individuals produce the society that produces individuals.

And it's an entire society speaking inside you — millennia of culture in each word. Individual and society don't take turns: they're simultaneous, in the very sentence you're thinking now.
Biológico — tener un hijoBiological — having a child
Tu deseo más personal es, a la vez, la especie reproduciéndose a través de ti. Pero el humano puede negarse: con la anticoncepción, el individuo escapa al mandato de la especie. Cada término, dice Morin, «es a la vez medio y fin» de los otros, y es «irreductible aunque dependa de los otros». Ahí reside la base de la complejidad humana: tres realidades que no se dejan reducir a una sola. Each term, says Morin, "is at once means and end" of the others, and is "irreducible though dependent on the others". Here lies the basis of human complexity: three realities that won't reduce to one.
Donde se vuelve incómodoWhere it becomes uncomfortable
Si la sociedad está dentro de mí y la especie me usa, ¿soy libre? Morin responde: la autonomía es real, pero dependiente. Puedo emanciparme de mi sociedad — usando ideas que esa misma sociedad me dio. La libertad no es independencia absoluta: es margen de juego dentro del bucle. Quien se cree puro individuo autosuficiente ya está poseído por una de las ideologías de su sociedad. If society is inside me and the species uses me, am I free? Morin answers: autonomy is real, but dependent. I can emancipate from my society — using ideas that very society gave me. Freedom isn't absolute independence: it's room to play within the loop. Whoever believes himself a pure self-sufficient individual is already possessed by one of his society's ideologies.
